Aaron Woods has taken on some of the toughest opponents in the game, but it’s the fear of the unknown that really makes him “a little scared.”

Woods announced his retirement earlier this month after a 14-year career which included 269 NRL games, 14 games for New South Wales and 17 appearances for Australia. He’s also a two-time Dally M Prop of the Year.

The 33-year-old joined the Fox League Podcast this week to reminisce on his decorated career, including his very first NRL pre-season as a 17-year-old, pulling on a green and gold jersey, as well as his Tigers exit and the lessons learned as he bounced between four clubs.

‘Another great retirement, brought to you by Hostplus. That’s a plus. Search Hostplus retirement today.’

Aaron Woods joins the Fox League podcast to discuss his career, retirement and what comes next after footy.

With Manly bowing out of the premiership race, Woods enjoyed his last ‘Mad Monday’ as a professional rugby league player this week. It was “pretty tame” compared to when he first entered the NRL world.

There’s no time to rest though because Woods is busy working in multiple media gigs with Triple M and Fox League — something he’s been doing for a few years now.

Woods, along with fellow retirees, will be celebrated on grand final day. But first they’ll get to experience some seminars next week which will help with this confronting next phase of their lives.

“The NRL do such a great thing with the retirees… just to help you for when you do transition,” Woods told the Fox League Podcast.

“For some players it could be out of the blue and for other players they could be preparing for it… so (this ensures) you don’t fall too much into a hardship.

“It’s a good initiative by the NRL to help us with those things because we’re in the unknown.

“I’ve played footy for 15 years since I finished high school, now I’ve got to go out and get a proper job. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit nervous and scared because you’re going into the real world now.

“We’ve always been that rugby league player where people have done our health insurance and our pay and all that sort of stuff. If you haven’t looked into that while you were playing now you’ve got to go out and really get to know what the real world is all about.

“In that circumstance you’ve got to realise it’s going to be different, there’s going some hardships, there’s going to be some good times but there’s a lot of people there to support you. I’ve got my wife, a couple of family friends who really help.

“There’s going to be moments that are great and there’s going to be moments that will be like ‘wow, it’s a lot different without footy’.”

Retirement will really set in for Woods when November rolls around and players start to return to pre-season. He did 16 of them so knows the “anxiety” before day one all too well.

His first pre-season was way back in the summer of 2008/2009 with the Wests Tigers. He had just graduated Year 12 at Holy Cross College, Ryde and got a ‘welcome to the NRL’ moment he’ll never forget.

“Two of my favourite blokes to play with — Keith Galloway and Bryce Gibbs — they punched on at training,” Woods revealed.

“The era was a lot different when I came through, it was basically ‘speak when spoken to’ so I was too scared to say anything.

“We were just doing a catch-pass drill… there was this moment in the drill where ‘Gibbsy’ was taking the p**s a bit, he kept throwing it real low and Keith would either drop it or just catch it.

“Keith is a very proud man, he doesn’t like being put on show — especially in front of young guys who he’s supposed to be the leader of. He said ‘if you do it one more time I’m going to rip your head off.’ Gibbsy throws it at his feet and next thing you know it was on.

“Poor old Royce Simmons (assistant coach at the time) was like a little garden gnome in between trying to grab them. It was an eye-opener.”

Woods went on to captain the Tigers during his seven years in the NRL side before his highly-publicised exit at the end of the 2017 season.

He signed a four-year deal with the Bulldogs and “really enjoyed” his start to life there but was squeezed out due to salary cap pressure after just 14 games.

He went to the Sharks next for three-and-a-half seasons, which he has very fond memories of.

From the Shire, Woods headed down to Wollongong for one-and-a-bit seasons with the Dragons. That was a “funny period” of his life, which ended abruptly in a swap deal with rising Manly forwards Viliami Fifita and Alec Tuitavake.

“It’s funny how I found out I was coming to Manly. I think it was two or three nights before a game, we were having dinner at the leagues club and ‘Hook’ (former coach Anthony Griffin) and Ben Haran (general manager of football) kept looking at me,” Woods explained.

“I ended up ringing my manager… and he asked if I had heard the news. He said ‘I think what they want to do is swap you for these two other players at Manly.’ I said ‘really?’ I had no idea.

“A couple of days later I was 18th man for the Dragons and the next day I was in Manly.”

Woods learned just how quickly things can change in the NRL — and that above everything else it’s a business.

But there’s a silver lining to all of his club changes.

“I would’ve been happy with one NRL game, but to play so many games for so many clubs I’m pretty happy. Let’s just say the reunion days will be pretty fun — I’ve got five to go to,” he laughed.

It’s also quite fitting that he ended his career with Manly given it was the dream he shared in his Year 6 yearbook when asked where sees himself in 10 years.

“I see myself playing for the Northern Eagles,” an 11-year-old Woods wrote as a mad fan of the club that was during it’s merger period.

Expect to see Woods popping up in the media more now that he’s hung up the boots. And he has another passion outside of rugby league that he might finally have enough time to entertain.

“I love coffee and I love talking to people. So what I really wanted to do while I played — but just didn’t have time — was to open up a coffee shop and just get to meet people in your local area,” he said.

“I love talking and getting to know people… if you speak to any of the people at the five clubs I’ve been at they’ll tell you ‘the big fella loves a coffee and a yarn.’

“I’ve done my barista course as well, we were lucky enough to do that at the Tigers. I’ve always wondered about opening up a coffee shop or creating my own beans.”
